This FreeBackgroundCheck opt-out guide will tell you your options for removing your personal data from the people-search site.
In today’s digital world, your personal information is more accessible than it’s ever been before. And often, it exists in places where you’ve never knowingly shared it.
Background check websites, people-search databases and data broker search engines collect and organize a huge amount of public and sensitive information. This data is packaged into thorough profiles of individuals that anyone can look up with a simple search.
These sites often claim to serve legitimate purposes, such as identity verification and transparency. However, they also create real-life risks for those who have their information accessible.
The information included on these sites — address, phone numbers, family members’ names, employment history, property records, criminal history, and more — can show up on dozens of other websites and expose you to privacy violations, unwanted contact and reputational harm.
For many individuals and businesses, removing personal and private information from these sites is essential to controlling their digital footprint. However, the opt-out process can be confusing, time-consuming and slow to result in anything — and that’s if the site has an opt-out process at all. Moreover, every data broker website has its own guidelines, verification steps, waiting periods and loopholes that mean removal of your information might never actually happen.
In this guide, we’ll explain how to have your information removed from FreeBackgroundCheck.org so you can take back control of your life or your brand.

Does Free Background Check Have an Opt-Out Process?
In the past, it seems that the Free Background Check website did have an opt-out process you could follow to remove your personal information from the site. Today, though, you have to contact the site directly to request removal of your information.
If you click on the FAQ link in the footer of the website’s homepage, you’ll go to a page with answers to common questions. The last question on the page is, “How can I remove my information from the public records database?”
The answer says that Free Background Check will remove your information as a courtesy, but that you’ll have to contact customer support directly. You’ll also need to show proof of your identity and your address (like a state driver’s license) to remove your information from the site.
Here’s exactly what to do:
Step 1: Contact customer support for the online service
Starting on the FreeBackgroundCheck homepage, scroll to the bottom. Click the Contact Us link in the footer.
Step 2: Find the site’s contact information
On the Privacy Policy page you’re redirected to, scroll to the bottom. The last entry is Contact Us. You can either click the Click Here link to go to the contact form, or you can email the site directly at privacy [at] freebackgroundcheck [dot] org.
Step 3: Inquire about the online background checks opt-out process
The FAQ page says to get in touch with the site to find out which steps you need to follow, namely getting a fax number or mailing address to send in your removal request.
When you fill out the contact form or send an email, explain that you want to remove your information and include your reason for wanting to remove it. You may also want to include a URL that goes directly to your information on the site, though they don’t typically process the personal information removal service via digital communication. The FAQ page states, “Requests for opt out will not be processed over the phone or via email.”
If you’re filling out the contact form, select Privacy Issues from the Subject drop-down menu.
Most importantly, ask what you need to do to have your information removed. You’ll need their fax number or mailing address to submit your removal request.
Step 4: Send the documentation to the online background checks site
Once you have the contact information you need, send in a copy of your ID and proof of address. Then, check back with the site after a few weeks, which should give them enough processing time.
