How To Remove a Reddit Post: A Step-by-Step Guide

Graphic titled "your guide to remove reddit posts to protect your online reputation" featuring various Reddit interaction icons such as comments and likes in green speech bubbles.

If you’ve been using Reddit for a long time, you may want to prune your past posts and comments to better reflect where you currently are in life or business. Whether a past post no longer aligns with your current brand voice or goals or it contains outdated information that you don’t want users to find, knowing how to remove a Reddit post can help you clean up your online reputation.

You also may want to have another user’s Reddit post or comment removed if it’s causing harm to your personal or business reputation or if it’s spreading misleading information. When it comes to other people’s content on Reddit, you’re more limited in what you can have removed, but it still pays to try.

Note that we use the terms “post” and “comment” interchangeably to refer to content that you or another user posts on Reddit.

Key Takeaways

  1. You can delete or overwrite your own Reddit posts and comments but you fully control only your own content, not replies from others.
  2. You cannot remove someone else’s content directly. You must report it and moderators decide whether it stays or goes.
  3. Deleted Reddit posts aren’t fully gone. Google caches and direct links can keep them accessible for a time.
  4. Reddit does not offer a one-click bulk delete option for your entire history.
  5. Large-scale Reddit post removal requires Reddit data request options or third-party automation tools used with caution.
  6. Even after deletion, threads and surrounding comments can remain visible and provide context for the original post.

What You Should Know About Removing Reddit Posts

Before we get into how to delete a Reddit post, there are a few things to be aware of:

Deletions Aren’t Guaranteed

Reddit admins are able to reverse a deletion. Even if you think you’ve deleted a Reddit post and nobody will be able to find it, there’s a possibility it’ll appear back on the website without you realizing it.

That’s because a deletion on Reddit is a “soft delete.” The content is removed from your public profile view but it isn’t immediately erased from Reddit’s servers. As a result, cached versions in search engines like Google and copies stored by third-party archiving sites may continue to exist for a period of time. When accessed directly, a deleted post will usually display “[deleted]” while the surrounding thread and comments remain intact.

If a Reddit admin reinstates a deleted post, it could continue to show up as deleted on your profile but be searchable via a web browser, particularly if the user isn’t logged in to Reddit. It could also be easily found if someone has a direct link to your post.

Instead of simply deleting a post, you may want to overwrite it. We’ll go over that process a bit later on.

Comments Will Remain

Comments won’t be deleted even if a post is removed. If you remove your own post from Reddit, the comments underneath that post won’t be removed. People who are looking at the post may be able to figure out the context of your original post, even if it’s no longer there. Also, some Reddit users will quote your original post so some of the content may still be viewable in the comments.

Moderators Remove Other Users’ Content

When it comes to other people’s Reddit content, only moderators can opt to have it removed. If you’re the moderator (mod) of a subreddit, then you’ll have the authority to remove a post or comment someone else makes. However, if you’re not a mod, you’ll need to contact a moderator to alert them to the post and ask that they take it down which they may or may not agree to.

It’ll be easier to have the post removed if it violates the subreddit’s rules of conduct. Otherwise, you’ll have to make a pretty good case that it shouldn’t remain visible on Reddit any longer.

Note that comments on your own posts have to be removed by a moderator. You only have control over what you post and not what anyone else posts, even if it’s in response to you.

How To Remove a Reddit Post

Next, we’ll go over three options for removing a Reddit post:

Note that there’s no 100% guaranteed way to remove your content from Reddit but some options are better than others.

To get started, head to Reddit and log in using the profile icon in the top-right corner of the screen.

Delete Your Reddit Post (Desktop)

To find your Reddit posts, click your profile picture in the top right corner of the page. Then, click View Profile from the drop-down menu.

Next, click the Posts tab.

Find the post you want to delete and click the three-dot menu. Select Delete Post from the drop-down menu. To confirm the deletion, click the red Delete button in the pop-up window.

You’ll see a confirmation message that the content was deleted. If you refresh the page or revisit the subreddit where it appeared, the post will be gone.

Delete Your Reddit Comment (Desktop)

To delete a comment, click your profile icon and select View Profile. Then, click the Comments tab. Find the comment you want to remove and click the three-dot menu beneath it. Select Delete Comment from the drop-down menu.

To confirm deletion of the comment, click the red Delete button in the pop-up window. After refreshing your page, the comment will no longer appear on your profile or in the discussion thread.

Delete a Reddit Post or Comment (Mobile App)

If you’re using the Reddit mobile app on iPhone or Android, open the app and sign in to your account. Tap your profile avatar in the top-right corner, then select Profile.

Open the Posts or Comments tab depending on the type of content you want to remove. Find the content, tap the three-dot menu, then select Delete. Confirm your choice when prompted. The post or comment will be removed from your account immediately.

Overwrite Your Reddit Post

While it’s not difficult for Reddit to un-delete a removed post, it’s far more difficult for admins to revert an existing post to a former version. That means that, in some cases, overwriting your Reddit post instead of removing it will be the safer option.

If the content isn’t something of concern, deleting it may be the best option because if it does end up back on Reddit, it won’t cause you any harm.

If you’re worried about it being found, though, overwriting it and then either leaving it up or deleting it is a better option.

Navigate to the content following the same steps as above. To quickly recap:

  • Click your profile icon
  • Select View Profile.
  • Open the Posts or Comments tab
  • Find the content you want to edit
  • Click the three dots next to the content and select Edit
  • Make your changes to the content, then click Save.

Request Removal of Another User’s Content

If you want another user’s content removed from Reddit, you can only delete it if you’re a moderator of the subreddit. Otherwise, you’ll need to report the post so that a mod can decide whether or not to remove it.

Find the post in question, then click the Three Dots underneath it. Select Report.

You’ll see a Submit a Report window pop up. Select why the post violates the subreddit’s rules. You can only select one option. When you’re done, click Next.

Depending on your first selection, you may have to include more information. For example, if you choose “Sharing Personal Information” as the reason for the report, the next page will ask you if it’s your personal information or someone else’s that’s being shared.

When you’re finished, click the Submit button. You can also click the X button on the top right corner of the window if you change your mind about reporting the content.

Delete Multiple Reddit Posts or Comments at Once

If you need to remove dozens or even hundreds of Reddit posts or comments, it’s important to know that Reddit does not offer an integrated bulk-delete feature. Users must normally delete content one item at a time through their profile.

For larger clean-up projects, you have a few options. First, you can reach out to Reddit directly by emailing [email protected] from the verified email address associated with your account. You can also submit a request through Reddit’s official privacy or data request forms to ask about account data and content removal options.

Some users turn to third-party tools to automate the deletion process. These tools can help remove large volumes of posts and comments much faster than manual deletion. However, they aren’t affiliated with Reddit and their functionality can change if Reddit updates its platform or API policies. Before using any third-party deletion tool, back up any content you may want to keep and review the tool’s privacy and security practices.

What Happens When You Delete a Reddit Post?

When you delete a Reddit post, the content is removed from your profile but it isn’t fully erased from the internet. Instead, Reddit replaces the title and body of the post with “[deleted]” and removes your username from the original submission.

However, the post URL itself doesn’t disappear. The thread remains live along with all existing comments from other users. This means the conversation around your post is still visible even though your original content is gone. Any karma earned from the post also remains tied to your account history and isn’t reversed when the post is deleted. In addition, anyone who already has the direct link can still access the thread.

Outside of Reddit, your post may continue to exist in search engines and archives. Google can also display cached versions of pages for days or even weeks after deletion and third-party archive sites may retain copies of the original content. Check out our guide on Reddit posts in Google search for more information.

Because of this off-platform resistance, it’s best to overwrite sensitive text before deleting a post. Editing the content first helps reduce what search engines and archives capture before the deletion request takes effect.

Why Reddit Removes Your Posts

Sometimes, a Reddit post is removed even if you didn’t delete it yourself. This involuntary removal usually happens through automated systems or moderation actions. Common triggers include AutoModerator rules (like karma minimums and account-age requirements), violations of a subreddit’s specific community rules or Reddit’s broader spam and content filters. In more serious cases, sitewide enforcement may occur if content breaks Reddit’s rules.

To confirm whether a post has been removed rather than deleted, try viewing it while logged out or in an incognito window. If you can still access the post via a link but it shows a removal notice or missing content, then it was likely removed by moderators or Reddit systems.

You may also receive a notification explaining the removal. You can check your modmail (if applicable) for details from subreddit moderators. If a post is removed by Reddit administrators or your account is suspended, you may be able to file an appeal through Reddit’s official appeals process. These reviews can take several business days to resolve, depending on case volume and complexity.

Can I remove all of my Reddit comments and posts at once?

Reddit doesn’t currently offer a native one-click option to delete all comments and posts at once. For large-scale removal, users can request account data actions by emailing [email protected] from their verified email or submitting an official Reddit privacy/data request. Some people use third-party tools to automate deletion but these are unofficial and should be used cautiously after backing up any important content.

How do you delete your Reddit history?

Reddit doesn’t offer a full option to delete your entire history. However, you can clear local activity and search history. On mobile, go to your profile icon, then click Settings, Account Settings and Clear Local History to remove browsing data and suggestions.

On desktop, click your profile icon (top right) and go to Settings, Privacy and Security to clear available history options. Keep in mind that you must still manually delete posts and comments from your profile.

Does deleting my Reddit account remove my comments and posts?

No, if you delete your Reddit account, your comments and posts will remain on the site. Instead of your user name and profile picture next to them, users will see this: [deleted]
